  The Rapid Festival

Organisation

Youth Arts Queensland (YAQ)

Project Description

This is an action research project which ran as part of the development of RAPID 2001. It was lead by Key researcher Antonella Casella and 5 peer researchers (who were also involved in organising the Rapid festival). This team conducted action research methods before, during and after the project to measure the effect of youth cultural development practice as a form of drug and alcohol abuse prevention.

The research demonstrated the unique and effective role of good youth cultural development practice in delivering drug and alcohol prevention outcomes in a community context. It explains how an annual youth music festival contributes to an increase in the capacity for one community to provide an effective prevention strategy for its young people through understanding and supporting their interests and building a sustainable network of support within their local community.

The Rapid Festival is an annual regional youth music festival organized in Pine Rivers Shire, north of Brisbane, by a group of young people aged 14-20. RAPID is supported through Catalyst Youth Arts Organisation Inc. and is based on principles of youth participation and ownership and providing opportunities for young and emerging artists and arts organisers.
