  Back to front People

Organisation

Katherine Community Youth Theatre

Project Description

When discussions started about putting a theme or a story to the productions, one of the key organisers from Kalano community suggested they tell the story of ‘back to front' people and use the performances as a way of showing that these young Aboriginal people are not succumbing to a ‘back to front' lifestyle.

Being ‘back to front' can mean many things, such as learning about whitefella culture over traditional culture. The best example of being ‘back to front' is a teenage mother, who has children before her time, then offloads them to other family members and continues living life as a young person, not as a responsible mother. That is what being ‘back to front' is about and community members worry about it. The teenagers of ‘Katherine Community Youth Theatre Group' are set to prove through dance and story that young people don't have to be ‘back to front' people.
